Whether you’re seeking SMP in Fairfax, Reston, McLean, or Washington, D.C., Edge Scalp Ink can create a customized SMP treatment based on your hair loss pattern, features, and desired look.

SMP For Men

With SMP for men, we can restore the appearance of a defined hairline, cover male pattern baldness, add the look of density, or create a natural shaved-head effect.

SMP For Women

We use SMP for women to reduce the contrast between your hair and scalp around the part, crown, temples, or hairline to make your hair look fuller.

We talk more about concealing thinning hair for women in our full blog post.

SMP For Alopecia

If you have patchy or widespread hair loss, SMP for alopecia creates more even-looking pigment and coverage across the affected areas.

How Our Artists Create Realistic Hair Tattoos

line
  1. Personalized Hairline Design: We plan your hairline around your facial structure, age, existing hair, and pattern of hair loss.
  2. Custom Pigment Matching: We choose your pigment to complement your skin tone and natural hair color.
  3. Layered Coverage: We create your hair tattoo across two to three sessions for a softer, more realistic finish.
  4. Careful Refinements: We adjust the shape, density, and balance as the pigment settles between appointments.
  5. Aftercare and Maintenance: We’ll show you how to protect your results and plan touch-ups as the pigment fades over the next three to five years.

Aftercare Tips To Preserve Your Results

We provide you with clear SMP aftercare instructions to help your scalp heal properly. Here’s what you can expect:

During the first few days:

  • Keep your scalp dry for about four days.
  • Don’t touch, scratch, rub, or pick at the treated area.
  • Avoid direct sunlight, tanning beds, swimming, saunas, and heavy sweating.
  • Don’t apply lotions, sunscreen, hair products, or topical treatments unless your artist approves them.

Over the following weeks:

  • Gently wash your scalp with lukewarm water and a mild cleanser after the first four days.
  • Let your scalp air-dry or gently pat it with a clean towel.
  • Allow dryness or flaking to clear without peeling or picking the skin.
  • Use a fragrance-free moisturizer once your artist says it’s safe.
  • Apply SPF 30 or higher after your scalp has healed to prevent fading.

Possible SMP side effects:

  • Temporary redness, tenderness, or minor swelling
  • Dryness, tightness, or light flaking
  • Pigment that looks darker at first before softening into its final shade
  • Worsening pain, spreading redness, drainage, fever, or significant swelling that requires medical care

Most reactions are mild and improve as your scalp heals.

Contact a doctor if you notice signs of infection or symptoms that continue to worsen.

How Your Hair Tattoo May Change Over Time

Your hair tattoo will look darker at first, then soften as your scalp heals and the pigment settles.

Here’s how your results may develop:

  • Right After Treatment: Your pigment may look bold, and mild redness lasts about 24 to 72 hours.
  • Days 1–4: Your scalp begins healing while you keep the area dry and avoid sweat, heat, and irritation.
  • Days 5–7: You can usually begin gentle cleansing, though the pigment may still appear darker than the final result.
  • Weeks 2–3: Dryness and light flaking fade as the pigment starts blending more naturally with your scalp.
  • Weeks 4–6: Your healed results become clearer, making it easier to identify areas that may need added coverage.
  • After 3–5 Years: Your SMP may gradually lighten, and a touch-up can refresh the color and definition.

Answers To Your Top SMP Questions

Are there any potential risks or complications with SMP?

SMP is generally considered low risk when it’s performed by a trained artist who follows proper hygiene and safety standards. You may notice temporary redness, tenderness, swelling, dryness, or light flaking as your scalp heals.

Does the scalp micropigmentation procedure hurt?

Most clients describe SMP as a light scratching or pressure sensation rather than significant pain. Your comfort level may depend on your sensitivity and the area being treated.

What factors should I consider before undergoing SMP?

Consider your hair loss pattern, preferred hairline, scalp condition, skin type, hairstyle, and long-term expectations before starting SMP. During your consultation, we’ll create a treatment plan around your appearance and goals.

Is scalp micropigmentation a worthwhile investment?

SMP can be a worthwhile option if you want longer-lasting coverage without surgery, prescription treatments, or daily concealers.

Since results can hold up for several years with occasional touch-ups, it can also save you time and money over time.

Can a tattoo parlor perform scalp micropigmentation treatment?

A traditional tattoo shop may not use the scalp-specific pigments, needles, techniques, or hairline design methods required for SMP.

Choosing an artist who specializes in scalp micropigmentation can help you avoid unnatural color, large pigment impressions, or a hairline that doesn’t suit your features.
